The UBC Certificate in International Development addresses the growing need for trained professionals with knowledge of international development issues and the skills to work effectively in international environments. The certificate is designed for those working or planning to work in the field of international development, individuals interested in global issues and those considering future studies in the field. Unique to this part-time program is a focus on intercultural issues. To obtain the UBC Certificate in International Development, participants complete two required courses (Introduction to International Development, and Foundations in Intercultural Studies), and must choose three elective courses out of six (Introduction to International Health, Issues in International Health Delivery, Project Planning and Proposal Writing, Evaluating International Development Work, Education and Development, and Labour Migration and Displacement).
The program comprises predominantly online courses. Unique to this part-time program is a focus on intercultural issues and skills in international development. Courses will offer both practical skills in intercultural communication, and an examination of the many cultural challenges to development. All courses have six to eight weeks of online and individual work including readings, discussions, and assignments. The program features experiential learning methods including self-reflective journals, multimedia interactive exercises, group discussions, mini-lectures, skills practice, case studies, readings, practical written assignments and online discussion/learning among participants and course facilitators.
