CIPCA / FXA Library

Specialized Library in Social Sciences with emphasis on Rural Issues in Bolivia and Latin America.

Its establishment is linked to action and research activities developed by CIPCA since 1971.

Since late 1987, with an installed infrastructure for research, CIPCA Library opens its doors with the aim to provide access to researchers to over 15,000 documentary resources. Since June 2007, Xavier Albó Foundation is in charge of the Library, continuing the work of this important public information center.

Since its establishment, the literature collection has grown thanks to grants provided by researchers and national and foreign institutions. The first ones were granted by Xavier Albó (chief advocate for the Library), Francisco Xavier Santiago and Pedro Pablo Negre. Later, it receives from the Bustillos Family, publications from the former "Bautista Saavedra" Library. The British Council also provided British publications related to the theme of the library, plus some journal subscriptions. Cornell University collection strengthens the Library with thesis on Bolivia and Latin America.

Two renowned researchers: John Murra and Estanislao Just donated their personal libraries, anthropology and colonial history of America books. Two other significant donations were made: films by Luis Espinal and publications on social and coca by Federico Aguilar Coca. It is remarkable the contribution of renowned social scientists in Bolivia and abroad, such as Christian Jette, Ramiro Molina Barrios, Ricardo Calla, Hugo Fernandez, Hugo Rivas, Pamela Calla, Pablo Laguna, Isaac Sandoval, Luis Ramiro Beltran, Nancy Postero, Cletus Barie, Tom Pellens, Anthony Bebbington, Gerardo Fernández Juárez and Luis Gómez, among others.

Other major donations come form the Publishers Alliance, La Casa del Libro - Spain (Historia 16 Collection), the Embassy of Spain in Bolivia (Quincentennial Publications), Grupo Santillana, Bolivian Studies Institute, U.S. Embassy, Embassy of Ecuador, PIEB Foundation, FAO-Bolivia, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru, IFEA, FOBOMADE, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, ILDIS, UNDP-Bolivia, Fundemos, IWGIA and the Autonomous University of Mexico, through Flavio Barbosa.

Importantly, entire libraries were transferred to strengthen the CIPCA/FXA Library. These are:

  1. CIPCA La Paz Library, with approximately 5,000 books on agricultural and rural issues.
  2. IBTA Program Library / SR-CRSP, specialized in rural issues.
